It's cheaper to film hours of scenes indoors and have people talk.and talk.and talk.

Loved the outdoor scenes which helped avoid the claustrophobia of "drawing-room dramas" that other movies/TV series fell into (because of budget).
#The count of monte cristo 1998 movie#
Seems this happens even more often in movies than even in comics or children's books!īTW- the costumes, camerawork and production values of this movie are excellent. I totally HATE the Edmond+Mercedes=4ever trope and this movie/miniseries plays RIGHT INTO IT. As if she wasn't part of his entourage since he came to Paris? It was weird that he sent Bertuccio to go and get Haydee from somewhere when he needed her to do her testimony. That whole "Camille" thing as a love interest was filler- just sidelined things and distracted from the real story. The Count's house seems SO EMPTY! It's like Bertuccio is the only guy around most of the time. "Danglars" isn't like "A Dangling Conversation". I liked the way that, since Depardieu is a native French speaker, we can hear the names pronounced correctly. They might not starve him to death, but they wouldn't feed him so much as to sustain his. He's a BIG guy, and after 14 years in prison, he wouldn't be that big and burly anymore. Gerard Depardieu is physically not the right person to play the Count. I'll have to watch this again to take some notes.

It's been a while since I last watched this (with English subtitles). Thanks for updating and crediting the review! Appreciated!
